Keepin’ Warm
It’s been a long time since I’ve seen Ricky and the distance disappears moments after we greet each other. She helps me lug my bags to the door and I’m face to face with another old friend: a monotype I made.
Art isn’t just about four white walls and a gallery opening. Those are lovely and quite traditional indicators of success. While I’d never discredit them, my work seems to fit best in places like this. It’s functional in that it offers privacy and also lets the viewer know what’s going on inside the house: Site specific.
My grandma mentioned that we are “all just walking each other home” and I’d offer that we’re keeping each other warm just the same.
I pulled this off the press five years ago. It’s lived in 5 different homes between Ricky and I - shuffling and toting papers from one space to another becomes a spell. They’re imbued with the magic of the conversations and meals shared near them. This print was with us in 2020 while we were mid pandemic, grasping at straws and then afterwords as the world kept moving and we caught up to it.
Art is a gesture similar to pulling your heart out and serving it for dinner day after day, packing it into to go containers and sending it home with your friends.
I feel so lucky to know artists and to see them, as they see me. It’s all about chasing the feeling down and then sharing it. I hope others feel it too.
